I do not understand why sexually explicit abuse has become popular in recent books, but it has.LLG is a fine author, I enjoy her books, but this one was very difficult to finish, and disappointingly, it finished with an odd solution.
I ought that the heroine was basically stupid and selfish. While her reasons for her actions are explained in the final chapters, she was still unlikeable. Maybe people who are forcibly raped repeatedly become numb as described, but this is a romantic fiction and it is not pleasant reading.
Everytime I began to enjoy the book and the interaction between the characters, there was a reference to her former husband, she treated the Hero poorly and while I felt sorry for her, I also felt annoyed.
This is not a fun read, not particularly romantic and above all else, there were four time periods that we were cast into without much structure that i could understand. In several varying chapters: when they met, when they met again and he became engaged to her cousin, when they were together as grounds for her divorce and currently. It was confusing and because none of them were very fulfilling as romance stories, I was disappointed four times by the unhappy ending...yes, the final HEA did happen but almost immediately after she describes being brutally abused by her husband, Hero asks her to marry him!?
How can you read about rape and then switch gears to GREAT! Everything is okay!? he wants to marry her!? Was this a sort of essay about how poorly the law treated women in the early 1900's? It is as if the author wanted us to understand how awful life was for women...We already know this, I just want an escape from life, not this.
I normally enjoy this author. But this book is just not a happy. Funny romance, i am not certain how to describe it, except disappointing.
Lisa Kleypas wrote a much better modern version of this that made me cry, laugh and cheer. Sorry LLG, many of your books are wonderful, but I did not enjoy this one.

Alright, I admit I read this book in a couple of days. It was interesting because the female heroine was so modern and the time period was the early 1900's. However, it took most of he book for the Aiden and Julia to even KISS!!! Then everything, including a steamy sex scene, all happened at the end of the book. Not alot of sexual tension or emotional build-up. Finally, there is a contrived "I can't marry you" conflict after said mind-blowing/life altering sex, which conveniently gets resolved in about two pages. Hmmmmmmm. I just felt a little let down and I definately don't agree that this book is on par with "And Then He Kissed Her". I would recommend checking this one out at the library.
From their very first meeting, Julia knew that Aidan Carr, the oh so proper Duke of Trathen, had ll she wanted..vil in him, a devil who secretly yearned for what he could not have, a devil who harbored a desire for her. so when she needed to be caught in a compromising situation, Aiden was the answer to her prayers. One tryst was a
Aiden is supposed to be looking for a bride, yet his scandalous liaison with Julia is all he can think about. Hot, erotic memories of kissing her skin, falling into her bed, pulling her naked body on top of his own continue to torment and temp him. What is it about this brazen seductress that he finds so hard to resist? And how can he stop himself from falling into her bed a second time? One tryst wasn't enough...
Loved it.
The story
Recently divorced Baroness Julia Yardley made herself a public spectacle when she was discovered by her then-husband in bed with the Duke of Trathen, Aidan Carr. Not to mention the slight that was put on Aidan's reputation, as he'd been engaged at the time of the tryst! Aidan finds that he can't keep Julia off his mind, and is too much a gentleman to give her the "cut direct," and the two of them keep finding themselves in situations which throw them together. ***SPOILER Needing work to pay off her debts, Julia becomes the social secretary for Aidan during his renewed hunt for a wife (calling herself Mrs. Boodle!), and this draws the two of them closer together, leading to some understanding. END SPOILER.***
My Thoughts
I found the relationship between them to be cute, and enjoyable. I also enjoyed learning about their characters, during "current times" as well as flashbacks (their first meeting was perky and funny). I enjoyed that Julia was such a multifaceted character. She was interesting and there was so much to learn. When the big secret at to why she maneuvered her husband to divorce her was brought to light, it was terrible, but not so horrible as I'd imagined it to be (with what I perceived to be quite a build up).
I give this book a rating of 4 Stars, as I found it fun, interesting, and amusing all at once. For the sexy bits, I'd give that a rating of 3, as it was sexy, but one part (of the first part) of the scene took me out of the story, with an eyebrow quirked in a "Huh?" face.
This was kind of awful. The premise was akin to sexual assault. The sexual tension and connection between the two lovers was missing. Everything was shoved into the last twenty pages or so of the book. I've enjoyed a few of her books, so figured this one was a safe bet. I'm just a bit surprised.
I do not understand why sexually explicit abuse has become popular in recent books, but it has.
